Indispensable tools

Step1: A Google account: It is no secret, I'm a Google fan. They give us so much stuff for free it's hard to not be a fan. Then I read an article about how they treat their employees and I am an even bigger fan. This is a company working for a better world. Not just a search engine. Most people think Google is just a search engine. Others are aware that they offer FREE email accounts through Gmail and some have even heard of Google Earth. But fewer people are aware of the other amazing web tools and applications that they offer. For anyone who wants to make money on the internet, a Google account is essential. Some Google Tools:

  • Webmaster tools
  • Analytics
  • Adwords
  • Adsense
  • Blogger
  • Google sites - 100MB free storage
  • Docs
  • Calendar
  • Groups

And there is lots, lots more. With tutorials and guides all the way. Google is one of your best friends on the internet and they offer many free solutions.

Step 2: A Payments Account To make money off the internet you need some way to take money/payments from people. The easiest and cheapest solution is PayPal. It is also the most popular/acceptable to buyers. I do recommend PayPal but with certain words of caution. What you should know before you sign up. Before you sign up with PayPal I need to be clear on some stuff. Just do a little looking around on the net and you'll find plenty of people who are pissed off with PayPal policies and actions. They are not a bank, they are a private company. This means they make their own rules and they have a reputation for erring on the side of caution, in a rather heavy-handed manner. They are very quick to freeze your account if they think something is wrong. So what constitutes "wrong" and what has pissed all those people off? Well, "wrong" means you break one of their terms and conditions or "policies". The onus is on you to familiarize yourself with their t's & c's. You must go read those documents and make sure you stick to their rules. I can pretty much guarantee that most of those pissed off people contravened one of their stipulated policies. In return, PayPal froze those accounts. And when that happens it is difficult to find out exactly what you have done wrong and even harder to resolve it. So read the rules first. NEVER, EVER give your PayPal account login details to anyone. If your account is fraudulently used, they freeze it. You cannot use that email address or credit card with them EVER again. There is plenty of competition, for those who do not want to use PayPal.  My other recommendation is 2Checkout.com. They are good and their customer service is outstanding. But they have a LONG list of prohibited and restricted products. Be sure to check that list before signing up with them. With Paypal there are 3 kinds of account, personal, premiere and business. Personal is all you need to make payments. If you want to take payments, you must upgrade to a premiere or business. The basic difference being that one is in your name, the other is in your company name. One word of caution, if you register as a business and try to take donations, you MUST be a registered non-profit. They will ask you for the documentation to prove it. So get signed up for a PayPal account if you don't have one yet. Sign up for PayPal and start accepting credit card payments instantly.

Step3: Support software To round out any internet business you need support services too. This is probably my most amazing find. It is a complete, free, hosted open-source support system. The best part, it even has a newsletter facility built in. I still have a little trouble believing what they offer for free. Free, Professional support software.

Step 4: A filesharing account You may want to offer people downloads. Perhaps it's a free gift when they register for your newsletter. Whatever the case, you need somewhere online to store that file. And a 'download URL' that you can share with people. You will need some kind of file sharing account to do this. Here there are free and not so free options:)
Free options Not Free options (but safer)
